Workshops and excursions

Surface models in City GML (guarantee Dr. Jan Růžička, wed 8:00 - 11:00)

City GML is specialized profile of Geography Markup Language for description of urban areas. It allows description of 2.5D and 3D objects. The workshop will be focused on encoding of surface models in City GML. There will be presented tools for import and export of digital surface models to and from City GML.

Introduction into Oracle Locator (guarantee Dr. Karel Janečka, mon 9:00 - 12:00)

The aim of the seminar is to introduce the Oracle Locator technology and give its possibilities for spatial data maintenance. Oracle Locator is an extension of Oracle database system used for management of spatial data. During the seminar the participants will try to store multidimensional spatial data using the SDO_GEOMETRY object data type and will create a particular spatial index upon such data. Furthermore they will explore the possibilities of Oracle Locator for spatial analysis. The participants will also test the loading of data from shapefile data format. The advantage of Oracle Locator is that this extension is available in Oracle XE. This version of well known database management system is free of charge. Required knowledge: The basic knowledge of SQL and relational database systems is recommended.

Water erosion modelling (guarantee Ivan Mudroň, MSc., mon 9:00 - 12:00)

Nowadays the society focuses on prevention of environmental problems. In the middle European area are many of this problems connected with the water element. Flooding, water erosion and other disasters are occurring more often over the last years. Sustained development of science and technology accessed the whole Earth and processes occurring on its surface. Thus the modelling of natural events gained on importance. The aim of this seminar is to introduce the problematic of water erosion and modelling of it. Erosion is process by which material is removed from a surface. Due to the force of the gravity material (sediments, rock, soil and other particles) is moved down-slope from higher to lower elevations. There other agents, such as stream network can pick up and transport it even to lower elevation. This mass-movement process occurs on all slopes with varying velocity and intensity. The practical part of the seminar will deal with modelling of the process of erosion. First the empirical Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) will be calculated, model results validation, pros and cons, input data. Later more sophistic models investigated – USPED rill and sheer water erosion, SIMWE etc. All simulations will be made in large scaled small watershed.

Virtual universe: Live (wed 11:00 - 13:00)

Through the planetarium, you can transfer anywhere in our virtual universe and look at objects in stereoscopic space administration. The show is live moderated in english. The show features the stereoscopic projection (3D).

Terrain Morphology and influence of mining (wed 8:30 - 13:30)

The tower of church St.Peter from Alcantara close to Karvina is inclined more than the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Originally built on the hill, the church has subsided by 38 m and now it is situated on the border of recently created pond. This is one of the impacts of underground mining in the Coal Mine Upper Silesian District. The rapid changes of terrain, changes of hydrological networks, changes of groundwater regime, inundations, landslides and infrastructure destructions accompany mining activities. The excursion provides a unique opportunity to see dynamic changes of surface models in situ.

The programme includes visits of the church St.Peter from Alcantara, several inundations, micromorphological changes, landslides, broken roads, salinization, prognosis of terrain development and modelling of water regime changes.

Planned duration: 5 hours (8:30-13:30). Transport by bus.

Expert guides: Ing. Pavel Malucha (Green Gas DPB a.s.),  assoc. Prof. Nada Rapantova (VSB-TU Ostrava).
